Carnival Dream
Al and Taran arrived in San Juan about 2 p.m. after spending the night at a hotel near the airport in Orlando. There, we were surprised to find out that our friend, Joy Yandell Hricko, was working in San Juan. Joy and three of her coworkers welcomed us on the dock just before we boarded the ship.
After checking in and having an early dinner, we walked up the hill from the cruise port into Old San Juan and headed for one of our favorite places, the fortress of San Felipe del Morro. We watched the sun set over the fortress from a nearby cafe with a fine view of the monument and the sea below.
Then, making our way through the Spanish colonial streets of the Old City, we got caught up in the excitement of the Festival of the Calle San Sebastián that was just beginning. It is a cultural celebration, parade, and block party all in one with food and music and dancing everywhere.
After getting a sample of the fun, we had to return to the Dream for the safety drill preceding the sail away at 10 p.m..
